Visit of the Minister of Education and Science - Krasimir Valchev

The Minister of Education and Science Krasimir Valchev visited the prehistoric salt-production and urban center - Provadia-Solnitsata. Corresponding Member Prof. Vasil Nikolov and his team presented to the guest the unique for the Balkans and Europe archeological complex from the 6th and 5th millennium BC. Minister Valtchev was impressed by the partially restored imposing fortification system of the oldest urban center in Europe, the massive remains of two-story buildings, the facilities for the industrial production of salt, and the results of its long-distance trade. He stressed the need to increase the number of organized visits to representative archaeological sites within school curricula. Together with Art. Cor. Vassil Nikolov and his team, he discussed the possibility of organizing a large information campaign, first at schools in Northeastern Bulgaria, which would include organized visits by students to the unique in the Balkans and Europe, salt-production and urban center, Provadia-Solnitsata.

Over the past 20 archaeological seasons at Provadia-Solnitsata, the remains of a total of 32 prehistoric houses have been registered, some of which are still being studied. One of the richest and most interesting houses discovered so far in the settlement mound is designated as number 17, about which we have already written in previous publications. It dates back to the late Middle Chalcolithic period (4600 BC) and was destroyed in a fire.
