The Unification of Bulgaria – A lesson in history thatcontinues to unite us!
Today, September 6 – the Day of the Unification of Bulgaria – the ancient archaeological site of Provadia-Solnitsata welcomed its visitors with a festive program combining history, archaeology, creativity, and engaging challenges for visitors of all ages. During the guided tours of the prehistoric complex, visitors had the opportunity to discover the history of Europe’s earliest salt producers and learn more about the unique site they were visiting. For our youngest visitors, the celebration began with a creative activity – they made their own “salt flags”, recreating the Bulgarian tricolour using coloured salt. In “The Unification Map”, salt became a symbol of unity. The borders of the Principality of Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia were recreated and then symbolically united into a single map, made from the colours of the Bulgarian map. Our small explorers also embarked on the historical adventure “Discover, Learn, Tell”! They searched for small pieces of the history of the Unification of Bulgaria placed along the route, learned interesting facts about this landmark event, and, at the end of the tour, shared what they had remembered. As a reward for completing their mission, each explorer received a small souvenir – a bottle containing three layers of coloured salt, recreating the Bulgarian tricolour. Today’s celebration reminded us that history does not live only in textbooks – it comes alive when we experience it together, when we share it with children, and when we pass the memory of the important moments of our past onto future generations. Let us preserve the memory of the Unification and never forget the strength of unity! Happy Unification Day!
