European Heritage Label for Provadia-Solnitsata!

We are immensely proud to announce that today, the European Commission has awarded the prehistoric salt-production and urban centre of Provadia-Solnitsata the European Heritage Label – a recognition granted to sites of exceptional significance for European cultural identity and the preservation of our shared European cultural heritage.
Receiving this label underscores the importance of the Provadia-Solnitsata archaeological complex, not only nationally but also across Europe. It offers the site the opportunity to join European networks and projects, exchange best practices, and present its cultural wealth to an international audience. The label motivates even more active conservation, research, and promotion of the Saltworks, firmly establishing its role as a cultural bridge between past and present, inspiring and educating generations.
This recognition encourages us to continue our work and expand public access to the unique history of Provadia-Solnitsata, while highlighting its role as a key cultural and historical site of European significance.
The European Heritage Label (EHL) is an initiative of the European Union, established under Decision 1194 of the European Parliament and the Council of Europe in 2011. It aims to promote sites of European cultural heritage that have become symbols of European integration, values, ideals, and history. To date, 67 sites have been awarded the label, including only one in Bulgaria!
The European Heritage Label unites monuments from both distant and more recent pasts, which hold strong symbolic European value and play a significant role in the continent’s history and culture. These sites offer visitors the chance to connect with Europe’s rich cultural heritage and broaden their understanding of European history.
Provadia-Solnitsata is the newest addition to the list of European Heritage Label sites, undoubtedly recognising Bulgaria’s exceptional prehistoric heritage and the region’s role in the development of the first European civilisation. We hope that the label will attract even more enthusiasts of ancient history to the Solnitsata and serve as a stimulus for the economic development of the modern town.
